The Limit

NZ Contemporary Arts Award Finalist 2018

Media: Steel, rubber, paint

Dimensions (H×W×D): 840 x 800 x 330 mm

The base materials for this sculpture are found objects. The bent steel is under tension from recycled rubber inner tubes. Material balance is maintained within the strain of strong metal against elastic rubber resistance. The physical stretch of the lines transfer to the red paint. The active centre of this piece is the force of metal held by rubber and the delicate balance of its equilibrium. The work is about opposites, tension and force. Where is the critical point? Is there a potential release?
